Keep moving!

This article is by home physiotherapist Paolo Salvatore of Ricaricaphysio.co.uk, on how to stay active in the old age:

Balance, muscles and joints get impaired as we age, especially if we start sitting down and not move for long periods of time.

Staying active as we age is important to offset the effects of ageing. You do not need to start complicating sporting activities; engaging in simple activities every day that break up motionless patterns is easier than you think.

Here are a few activities that will help breaking those patterns:

  • Housework – Your home is a good place to start moving around. Archiving some of your old photographs, ordering your bookshelves, ironing your clothes, cleaning your windows – any small activity that you can engage in within your home will be a good start to your exercising routine.

  • Gardening – If that is a possibility, try doing a little bit of gardening work every day. This can be as simple as watering your plants. Take it one step further - plant a new seed and help it grow every day! It’s a great feeling watching a seed turn into life…

  • Have a little walk – Especially if gardening is not an option, try going out for a little walk for both some fresh air and physical exercise. Walk slowly, no need to rush, and breathe deeply!

  • Yoga – Yoga is an excellent sport for any age. Some yoga organisations offer ‘elderly yoga’, where you can participate in yoga group activities with other seniors. It might be challenging at first, but soon you’ll find it to be a fun and helpful physical activity. And it can be quite social too!

  • Move whilst sitting down – Sitting down does not have to be completely motionless. Roll your shoulders, stretch your arms, move your head sideways and lift your legs every now and then!

You might feel tired at first as you start engaging in one or more of these activities on a daily basis, especially if your body is used to being inactive for long periods of time.

Do not worry – your body will soon adapt to your new activities and with time, it will strengthen and allow you to do a little bit more each time!
